The story of Sam Roglis

What seemed to be a healthy pregnancy for Kristin and Brian Roglis soon changed at 32 weeks. “I was rushed to the hospital to find out my baby was in distress and an emergency c-section had to be done,” said Kristin. “We were told Sam and I were saved by just minutes.”

The Roglis family soon learned what was happening with Sam. “Within a few days, when a feeding tube could not be passed down Sam’s throat, we learned of his Tracheal Esophageal Fistula/Esophageal Atresia,” she said. “His diagnosis knocked us off our feet. Grief, confusion, heartache and ‘what ifs’ were strongly felt, but quickly our faith lifted us up and we put our trust in God.”

Sam went through a very serious surgery to repair his esophagus and trachea. Due to breathing and feeding complications, he spent 73 days in the NICU.

“The toughest experiences are the many times seeing our little guy in terrible pain. I remember praying to God to keep our precious baby safe.”

Sam, now 3 years old, has been progressing and thriving ever since! He’s loving his first year of preschool. He is a big fan of Paw Patrol and playing with his big brother and sister. Although he has had health challenges, he is one happy, energetic and resilient little boy!

“St. John’s saved his life and they will continue to be a part of Sam’s journey as he grows. The doctors and nurses at St John’s will always hold a special place in our hearts.”
